Malaysia Extends Digital Nomad Pass Duration to Four Years
Written with artificial intelligence.

On October 9, the Malaysian government announced an extension of the 'DE Rantau Nomad Pass' for foreign digital nomads, allowing a maximum stay of up to four years under certain conditions. The program, managed by the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), is targeted at remote workers and freelancers.
Overview of the DE Rantau Nomad Pass
The Malaysian government has revealed plans to extend the duration of the 'DE Rantau Nomad Pass' for foreign digital nomads, with the potential for a stay of up to four years, contingent on meeting specific requirements. This announcement was made on October 9 and is aimed at attracting foreign talent to Malaysia.
Current Rules and New Conditions
Previously, the maximum initial stay granted under this program was 12 months, with the possibility of renewal extending the total stay to 24 months. Under the new measures, current pass holders who have reached the two-year limit may apply for an additional two years, provided they satisfy certain conditions.
According to data from MDEC as of April 7, 2025, there were 104 Japanese holders of the DE Rantau Nomad Pass, ranking Japan fourth globally in terms of nationality. The highest number of pass holders came from Russia (248), followed by Pakistan (180) and the United Kingdom (126).
Eligibility Expansion
Initially focused on IT and digital professionals, the program will expand to include non-IT professionals such as business developers, public relations experts, tax accountants, and legal advisors starting June 2024. Applicants in these fields must have an annual income exceeding $60,000.
The recent extension of the stay duration offers greater options for foreign remote workers, including those from Japan, for long-term residence in Malaysia. However, it is important to note that this extension applies specifically to current pass holders who have reached their two-year limit, and does not grant automatic four-year stays to all applicants.
