South Korea Introduces Digital Nomad Visa with Eased Eligibility Criteria
South Korea has officially launched its digital nomad visa, known as the F-1-D visa, with more flexible eligibility requirements compared to its pilot program. The visa allows foreign nationals working for overseas companies to live in South Korea for up to three years while working remotely.
Overview of the Digital Nomad Visa
South Korea's digital nomad visa, also referred to as the "workation" visa, became available on June 30, 2025. This visa is designed for foreign nationals employed by companies outside of South Korea, allowing them to live and work remotely from the country.
Changes to Eligibility Requirements
The new eligibility criteria are more lenient than those set during the pilot program that ran from January to May 2025. Here are the key changes:
- Income Requirements: Previously, applicants had to earn at least twice the gross national income (GNI) per capita of South Korea. Under the new rules, the income threshold has been adjusted depending on age and residency location.
- For individuals aged 18 to 34 living outside the Greater Seoul area, the minimum income requirement is now just the GNI per capita.
- GNI per Capita: As of 2025, Korea's GNI per capita was $36,963.
- Duration of Stay: The maximum stay has been increased from two years to three years.

Justice Minister Jung Sung-ho stated that the digital nomad visa aims to attract global creative talent, encouraging them to experience South Korea and potentially settle down in the country. The initiative seeks to create a settlement model that will benefit both the individuals and South Korea's economy.
